The Family Dinner Happening Inside My House

I walked through the front door and immediately froze. My neighbor, Claire, was sitting at my dining table with her husband, two children, her parents, and several people I had never seen before. Everyone went silent when they saw me. Claire jumped up so quickly that her chair nearly fell backward. She started explaining that her apartment had suffered a plumbing problem three days earlier and the landlord had told them they couldn’t stay there until repairs were finished. Instead of calling me, she had decided my empty house would be “the easiest solution.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Keeping an eye on my home apparently meant moving her entire family into it. Then I noticed suitcases near the stairs, toothbrushes in my bathroom, and children’s toys scattered across the living room. They hadn’t just come over for dinner. They had been living there. Claire kept insisting they had cleaned everything and hadn’t damaged anything, as though that somehow made it acceptable. Her mother even told me I should be grateful someone had been protecting the property while I was away.

I asked everyone to gather their belongings and leave that night. Claire became upset and said I was putting her children on the street. I reminded her that she had never asked permission to move into my home. Eventually, her husband quietly apologized and started carrying bags outside. Before leaving, Claire placed my spare key on the kitchen counter and told me she thought I trusted her.

“I did,” I replied. “That’s why you had the key.”

The next morning, I changed every lock and checked the entire house. Nothing valuable appeared missing, but the experience bothered me far more than any stolen item would have. Claire and I barely spoke afterward. I had asked a neighbor to watch my house—not borrow my life while I was gone.
