Dad’s expression changed when he saw the report number. Until that moment, I think he truly believed “family” would protect him from consequences. The dealership had already placed a hold on the Toyota because the title transfer was disputed. Their manager provided copies of the paperwork, including the signature that supposedly belonged to me. It did not take an expert to see that someone had tried to imitate my handwriting.
Over the next several days, the dealership cooperated while the transfer was investigated. The buyer had not done anything wrong, so the situation had to be handled properly rather than dramatically. Eventually, the sale was unwound, the dealership recovered its payment, and my parents were required to return the money they had received. Jake’s tuition was no longer magically funded by selling something that belonged to his sister.
Mom called repeatedly, insisting Dad had only been trying to help Jake. Dad sent one message accusing me of humiliating the family. I saved that too. What none of them seemed willing to understand was that the problem had stopped being about eight thousand dollars the moment they forged my name. They had decided my property and identity were theirs to use whenever someone else wanted something.
I moved into a small apartment near Memorial Hospital with help from coworkers. The Toyota eventually came back to me, still scratched near the bumper and still stubborn whenever the weather was damp. I loved it more than before. Months later, Melissa contacted me privately and admitted she had begun noticing how differently our parents treated us. Jake eventually found another way to cover school. I never returned home. My father had told me the door was right there. Walking through it became the first decision I made without asking whether my family approved.
