The Dress Was Hiding a Secret About Margot

Inside the box was my husband Daniel’s silver watch. I recognized the scratch across the back immediately. He had worn it for years before telling me he lost it shortly before his death. Margot’s mother, Celeste, wiped her eyes and handed me several old letters. Daniel’s handwriting covered every page. Then she told me the truth: years before Daniel married me, she had given birth to his daughter. Margot was Daniel’s child.

I could barely breathe. Celeste explained that Daniel had helped quietly when Margot was small, but fear and complicated circumstances kept the truth buried. After he died, she decided silence was easier than disrupting another grieving family. Somehow, Wren had discovered everything weeks earlier after recognizing Daniel in an old photograph Margot brought to school. She confronted Celeste privately and learned that Margot was her half-sister.

Suddenly, the dress made sense. So did the cardigan. Wren had not stayed awake because she pitied Margot. She had spent those nights sewing something beautiful for the sister she desperately wanted to know without exposing a secret that was not hers to reveal. Margot had cried when Wren finally told her why. Wren came home devastated because Margot had panicked and asked her to stay away.

I found Wren sitting on her bedroom floor and wrapped my arms around her. “You should have told me,” I whispered. She answered that she was terrified I would hate Margot for something neither girl had chosen. I could not promise everything would become simple. It didn’t. Margot needed time, and so did I. But months later, she began visiting occasionally. The first photograph of our two girls together shows Margot wearing Wren’s handmade dress. Daniel had left behind a truth that hurt deeply, but our daughters decided it did not have to become another reason for someone to feel unwanted.
