The Real Sale Left Nathan With Nothing

Gordon opened the folder and placed a closing statement on the table. The legitimate sale price was $2.7 million. Susan explained that after discovering Nathan’s unauthorized agreement, I had chosen to sell the property properly through my own attorney and title company. The transaction had already closed under my authority as the sole legal owner. Nathan’s $780,000 contract had been flagged during the title review because he had never possessed the power to transfer the house.

Loretta went pale. Nathan demanded to know where the money had gone. Susan answered before I could. The proceeds were sitting in protected accounts established in my name, subject to whatever marital-property issues the divorce process might lawfully address. Nathan had no immediate access. Gordon added that his clients had agreed to give me temporary occupancy so I could recover from childbirth and arrange a safe move instead of being forced out with a newborn.

Then Susan placed copies of Nathan’s agreement beside the real closing documents. His signature appeared beneath statements claiming he had authority to sell the property. The title company had preserved everything for review. Nathan tried insisting he had only been protecting our family finances. I looked at the $150 beside my daughter’s blanket and asked what part of his plan had protected her.

I never signed Loretta’s paper. Within weeks, my daughter and I moved into a smaller home I chose myself, while attorneys handled the separation and every disputed financial issue. Nathan kept saying I had sold “our” house behind his back. I reminded him that he had tried to sell my inherited home first for less than one-third of its value, then hand me $150 afterward. The difference was simple: his plan depended on taking away my choices. Mine began the moment I realized I still had them.
